How Would You Feel About Living Inside A Shipping Container House?
Ok, Here it is! How would you feel about living inside a cargo shipping container house today? If you cannot come up with a yes or no answer, then you may feel somewhere in the middle.
Lets get something straight off the bat now, As of now, I do NOT live inside one but I always wonder what it would be like to reside inside a used shipping container house. But, of course, it would have to be renovated with “cut-outs”, painted, removed rust, water-proof-sealant, hi-fi stereo….(Lol… kidding about that one ). However, I do know a few people who reside in them and I hear mixed opinions as usual.
Anyhow, have you ever asked yourself this question before? I am sure that if you are here reading this article, you must have some insight and questions regarding what it would be like to be a “cargo-container-man“? If I were to choose a spot somewhere on this planet to live inside one of these, it would have to be a secluded area either in the tropical or beach front regions. That is me though and many of you may have your own personal opinions.
I am writing this article out of hope that you will read it and ask yourself the same questions.
Where Would You Place Your Shipping Container Home if you Had Any Choice in the World?
After giving this some thought, how about hypothetically placing yourself inside one of these at the given location that you just chose? Can you see yourself happy there or would you feel different? The reason I ask these questions is because if you are somewhat serious or even thinking about building or having one built in the nearby future, this question now becomes really valid.
Remember this one important fact:
“Your Home is Where Your Heart is”..
Have you ever heard this before?
I am sure you have…
So, Before diving right into purchasing or building your shipping container home of the future, you NEED to ask yourself these questions! Finding a solution of where to set one up may be a little more difficult or even challenging than you first thought. Please feel free to comment on this article and I challenge any and all of you to come up with some cool ideas of where you think having a cargo container house in an “ideal” location would be! Any and ALL suggestions are welcome and if any ideas come about, please share them!
Thank You,
David Lee

Great post !
Appreciate the knowledge you have on container homes. This article especially caught my attention.
Keep up the great work on ISBU articles..
I’m already convinced container homes is the way to go. After pending sale of my place in Panama, I will be seriously communicating with David Lee on design/logistics/prices of my container(s) home where the jungle hills meet the Golfo Dulce somewhere between Punta Banco and Zancudo area of the Zona Sur. Presently, the design/concept will be 2 +- 3 ft elevated containers, parallel, separated by +- 12 ft concrete slab, no bathrooms, larger kitchen using bathroom space on suggested floor plans, all covered with common roof of metal trusses and zinc roof.
Thank You Mr. David Baker on your consideration about future container homes. Please do feel free to contact me or my brother (James Lee) on any assistance we can provide !

I love this idea! People could live in affordable, safe and comfortable housing–housing that stands against the elements. Also, I’ve seen some nicely made exteriors to eliminate that usual container look.
Businesses can keep much more of its profits; safer schools can be made. (Upstate NY lost kids who were in the cafeteria when their school was hit by a horrendous hurricane.) Schools would save money and TEACHERS’ JOBS WOULD BE SAVED!!!! States would then have surpluses instead of blaming educators for money problems.
I see so much potential here. These containers could also be nicely made for the old fashioned alternative schools (boot camps for tough kids; reform schools for the difficultly behaved kids; boarding schools for various reasons; fine arts schools; etc.) and for kids’ safe, fun places. President Obama should seriously consider these containers’ potentials. The potentials are endless; jobs would be vast; savings will take place; etc. The US would do very well.
I’m just hyped about these things. BTW, where in lower county NY can these be used? NYC has so many eye-sores; open lots. Other NY areas have open lots, etc. where these containers can be artfully used. Sorry, but a building of containers with various outer paint colors doesn’t do it for me. NYC chic–now we’re talkin’.
…so…much…positive…potential!!!!
I’d love to live in a shipping container house. Add-ons are possible, too. Where, in lower NYS are these allowed?
Thanks Shawty for your wonderful comment. Your enthusiasm is very authentic !
I could not agree with you more on what you said about how these containers can be put to use. I do not know for sure “where in lower county NY” where these containers can be used because there are too many elements and laws regarding zoning and permits that would need to be investigated for that part of NY. However, i am sure that they would be able to be used there as long as they would meet the city and state requirements. So, i would say (optimistically ) YES, they can !
The first thing I would do, if you are interested, is to call a real estate sales office in the area you are interested in and they may already have an answer for you. and if not, i am sure they can give you info on where to call to find out.
Good Luck and thanks again for a wonderful comment !
